CUAHSI CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

Twenty-five years ago, a group of researchers came together around a shared challenge. Hydrologic science needed standing as a discipline of its own, and it needed shared infrastructure that no single university could build alone. CUAHSI was incorporated in 2001 to take that on, and has evolved to meet the needs of the water science community, the funding landscape, and advances in technology. This timeline celebrates milestones over CUAHSI’s history that mark that journey, from CUAHSI’s founding in 2001 to the programs and data services that now serve researchers across the country.

CUAHSI NEWS & EVENTS

Registration for the Inaugural CUAHSI Water Science Exchange is now Open!

November 12-14, 2026 | University of Missouri

This two-and-a-half day gathering will bring together water science students and researchers to build skills, facilitate knowledge exchange, and spark new collaborations across career stages and institutions.

What you’ll find at the Exchange:

  • Skill-Building Workshops: Hands-on sessions leveraging multi-agency water data from NOAA, USGS, and NASA, plus cloud computing and open data publishing on HydroShare.
  • Special Topics Forum: AI in the Water Sciences. Bring your opinions and needs. Jordan Read (CUAHSI CEO) presents on AI in modeling and collaboration, then hosts interactive discussions.
  • Field Site Visits: Regional expertise from local researchers and practitioners working on Midwest water challenges at nearby field sites.
  • Poster Session: Present your research to an audience of up to 100 attendees spanning career stages. Students are especially encouraged to present.
  • Networking and Collaboration: Opportunities to create new connections across career stages, including students, faculty, agency scientists, and practitioners.

Data Publishing Program

Get your data across the finish line!

October 19 - November 9, 2026

Are you sitting on a nearly finished dataset that just needs a push to be published and shared? CUAHSI invites you to join a 3-week cohort program designed to help researchers clear the “last mile” of data publishing. Upon completion of all sessions and providing your feedback on ways to improve the program for future users, you’ll come away with a finished or nearly finished data publication, and you will receive a CUAHSI 25th Anniversary hoodie.

Over the course of five guided sessions in three weeks (1–3 hours per week), you’ll get:  

  • Step-by-step training on best practices for preparing and publishing scientific data in HydroShare.  
  • Structured working time with goal setting and support to move your dataset forward.  
  • Peer encouragement from a motivated cohort facing the same challenges.  

Explanations and examples of how data publishing in HydroShare fulfills grant funder requirements.

By the end of the program, you’ll have the tools, confidence, and momentum to make your data openly available and citable.  As a program attendee, we will ask you to complete a survey at the end to provide feedback on the program and identify improvements.

This program is limited to 30 spots. Eligible participants should have a dataset that is near or ready for publication and be available to attend most or all sessions; those interested should apply to participate. Participation will be confirmed on a rolling basis as applications are reviewed. Accepted participants also commit to providing feedback on the program through a survey.

Snow Measurement Field School 2027

January 4 – 7, 2027 | Bretton Woods, NH

Applications are open for the 2027 SINTER: National Snow and Ice Data Center and CUAHSI Snow Measurement Field School. Participants must apply to attend this workshop. This has been a very popular program, and space is limited.

Complete applications will be reviewed by workshop organizers and instructors on a rolling basis beginning October 1, 2026. The final date to submit applications is October 7, 2026. Applicants will be notified of their application status by Early November.

The course is geared towards graduate students, post-docs, professionals and senior scientists, modelers and remote sensing scientists who will make snow measurements as part of their research, or use snowpack data in their research. Priority will be given to graduate students and early career researchers, but undergraduates may participate pending availability.

The SINTER and CUAHSI Snow Measurement Field School is supported by NASA.

Leveraging HydroShare for Collaborative Research Data Management

Join us for a free webinar to learn how HydroShare can support your research data from start to finish, and get practical tips for managing files collaboratively with your team.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn how HydroShare facilitates the Research Data Lifecycle.
  • Understand how to work collaboratively on HydroShare resources.
  • Learn best practices for naming and data organization.
  • Practice using HydroShare to provide reviewer access to data and code.

This webinar is open to any researcher interested in using HydroShare for data management, no capacity limit. A HydroShare account is required to participate. If you don’t have one, create one here. CVU students are especially encouraged to join, as this session is scheduled to avoid conflicts with CVU coursework.

Call for Nominations: CUAHSI Board of Directors

The CUAHSI Board of Directors Nomination Committee is soliciting nominations from the CUAHSI community for the election of four Directors to serve terms from January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2029.

Nominations must be submitted no later than October 2, 2026.

The Board welcomes self-nominations as well as nominations of others from affiliates of our member institutions, members of our hydrologic community from a wide range of perspectives, career stage, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and other identities. Nominees with experience in fundraising, non-profit fiscal management and the non-profit legal realm, as well as those from the wider water science community who have not previously been eligible to run for the Board, including government and non-profit employees, are especially welcome.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Free NASA ARSET Training on Monitoring Surface Water with SAR for Water Resources Management

Join the NASA Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) Program for a training on Monitoring Surface Water with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for Water Resource Management. This intermediate-level training will cover the use of NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) SAR data and NASA's Observational Products for End-Users from Remote Sensing Analysis (OPERA) surface water products to detect, map, and monitor surface water to support water management activities. Sessions will be offered in both English and Spanish.

Those who attend both parts 1 and 2 and complete the required homework by the due date will receive a certificate of attendance.

VOICES FROM THE COMMUNITY

As part of our ongoing effort to highlight the people who make up the CUAHSI community, we're featuring reflections from individuals who have participated in our programs and services. Our next contributor is Amirhossein Montazeri, PhD Student, Computer Science, Boise State University.

My involvement with CUAHSI has been one of the most valuable parts of my PhD experience. Through participation in the 2026 CUAHSI Water Prediction Innovators Summer Institute, the Data Publishing Program, and WaterSoftHack, I have had the opportunity to work with researchers, mentors, and students from a wide range of scientific and technical backgrounds. These experiences have helped me expand my research skills, strengthen my confidence as an interdisciplinary researcher, and better understand how computing, data science, and hydrology can be connected to address complex environmental questions.

Each CUAHSI program contributed to my development in a different way. The Water Prediction Innovators Summer Institute gave me the opportunity to work closely with an interdisciplinary team on hydrologic research and modeling. The collaborative environment was especially valuable because I was able to learn directly from mentors and researchers with expertise different from my own. The technical presentations, discussions, and hands-on teamwork introduced me to new approaches in hydrologic modeling and encouraged me to think beyond the boundaries of my primary research area.

My doctoral research has focused on the use of geospatial data, remote sensing, machine learning, and environmental modeling to study wildfire progression and landscape impacts. Through CUAHSI, I had the opportunity to connect this background with broader questions in hydrology. These interactions helped me think more deeply about how landscape disturbance influences water systems and how computational and data-driven approaches can contribute to understanding those processes.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Jordan Read, CEO, and Julia Masterman, Community Relations and Training Coordinator attended the Near-Surface Geophysics Joint Workshop on August 25th in Albuquerque, NM The workshop brought the near-surface geophysics community together to shape future science support and collaboration. This event was sponsored by the NSF National Geophysical Facility (NSF NGF, operated by EarthScope) with joint support from multiple organizations involved in near-surface geophysics (NSF NGF, CTEMPs, CUAHSI, NHERI, OpenTopography, and AGU Near-surface Geophysics Section).
