As part of our ongoing effort to highlight the people who make up the CUAHSI community, we're featuring reflections from individuals who have participated in our programs and services. Our next contributor is Amirhossein Montazeri, PhD Student, Computer Science, Boise State University.
My involvement with CUAHSI has been one of the most valuable parts of my PhD experience. Through participation in the 2026 CUAHSI Water Prediction Innovators Innovative Summer Institute, the Data Publishing Program, and WaterSoftHack, I have had the opportunity to work with researchers, mentors, and students from a wide range of scientific and technical backgrounds. These experiences have helped me expand my research skills, strengthen my confidence as an interdisciplinary researcher, and better understand how computing, data science, and hydrology can be connected to address complex environmental questions.
Each CUAHSI program contributed to my development in a different way. The Innovative Water Prediction Innovators Summer Institute gave me the opportunity to work closely with an interdisciplinary team on hydrologic research and modeling. The collaborative environment was especially valuable because I was able to learn directly from mentors and researchers with expertise different from my own. The technical presentations, discussions, and hands-on teamwork introduced me to new approaches in hydrologic modeling and encouraged me to think beyond the boundaries of my primary research area.
My doctoral research has focused on the use of geospatial data, remote sensing, machine learning, and environmental modeling to study wildfire progression and landscape impacts. Through CUAHSI, I had the opportunity to connect this background with broader questions in hydrology. These interactions helped me think more deeply about how landscape disturbance influences water systems and how computational and data-driven approaches can contribute to understanding those processes.
The CUAHSI Data Publishing Program also had an important influence on the way I approach scientific data. Through this experience, I gained a stronger understanding of reproducibility, documentation, metadata, and the importance of making research products accessible and reusable. Resources such as HydroShare have been particularly useful in my PhD research, both as a platform for accessing scientific resources and as a framework for thinking more carefully about how research data and computational products should be organized and shared with the broader community.
My participation in WaterSoftHack further broadened my computational skills. Through collaboration with researchers working in water science and computing, including expertise in edge and cloud computing through the partnership with Clemson University, I was exposed to new ideas in scientific cyberinfrastructure, scalable computing, and reproducible research workflows. These experiences helped me see how emerging computational approaches can support hydrologic and environmental research at larger scales.
Just as important as the technical knowledge was the opportunity to learn how to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams. CUAHSI programs placed me in environments where people with backgrounds in hydrology, environmental science, computer science, modeling, and data analytics worked together toward common research goals. Learning from mentors, communicating with researchers outside my discipline, contributing my own computational expertise, and presenting ideas to diverse audiences helped me become a more confident and collaborative researcher.
CUAHSI has also helped me recognize the broader range of skills I can bring to water science. Coming from a civil and environmental engineering and geospatial modeling background, I have developed a stronger appreciation for the physical processes underlying hydrologic problems and for the importance of combining domain knowledge with data-driven and computational methods, rather than relying on computational approaches alone.
Overall, my involvement with CUAHSI has significantly enriched my PhD experience. The combination of mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, technical training, computing resources, data infrastructure, and opportunities to present and exchange ideas has expanded both my research perspective and my professional abilities. It has helped me move beyond simply applying computational methods to environmental data and toward thinking more broadly about how those methods can contribute to meaningful hydrologic science.
As I continue my research, I hope to build on these experiences by bringing together hydrology, geospatial science, artificial intelligence, environmental modeling, and reproducible data practices. CUAHSI has given me not only useful tools and resources, but also a scientific community that has encouraged me to explore new directions, collaborate across disciplines, and become more confident in the contributions I can make to water science.
