1-2 fully funded PhD positions are available in the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park, beginning in Fall 2027. Funding is provided through teaching and/or research assistantships, including a stipend and tuition remission.
Research topics can be tailored to the student’s background and interests and may include:
1) Coastal morphodynamics and sediment transport
2) Coastal flooding and coastal hazard assessment
3) Coastal wetland ecomorphodynamics
4) Integration of lidar, satellite, drone, and field observations with coastal process models
5) Data-driven and physics-guided approaches for coastal modeling and prediction
Applicants should hold a B.S. or M.S. in Geography, Geosciences, Engineering, Oceanography, Environmental Science, or a related field.
Preferred qualifications include one or more of the following:
1) Background in hydrodynamics, sediment transport, or geomorphology
2) Numerical modeling experience
3) GIS, remote sensing, or geospatial data analysis
4) Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, R, or related languages
5) Strong quantitative or computational background
