USGS Water Data APIs are changing - Here's what you need to do!
Many in the CUAHSI community rely on USGS Water Services APIs for daily research workflows—pulling streamflow, water-quality, and site information into models, dashboards, and classrooms. USGS is now modernizing those services.
What’s changing?
The familiar Water Services endpoints are being replaced by a new, standards-based suite at https://api.waterdata.usgs.gov/. The updated APIs follow the OGC API – Features spec, making them more interoperable, script-friendly, and GIS-ready.
Live as of June 2025
- /daily — replaces the legacy /dv daily-values service
- /monitoring-locations — replaces /site /time-series-metadata
- /latest-conditions — partial replacement for /iv
USGS plans to retire the old services by the end of 2025, so we encourage anyone still calling the legacy endpoints to begin migrating soon. Full details and support are on the USGS blog: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/blog/api-whats-new-wdfn-apis/.
