Position Overview
The Research Scientist I reports to the Lead of Research and plays a key role in advancing CUAHSI’s efforts in water data management, hydrologic modeling, and cloud computing. As part of a collaborative and multidisciplinary team of scientists, software developers, and engineers, the Research Scientist I leads and supports technical efforts across a range of CUAHSI programs.
This position applies expertise in hydrology, hydroinformatics, and environmental science (or similar) to develop innovative solutions that enhance the scientific value and accessibility of hydrologic data. Key responsibilities include supporting software development with domain knowledge, conducting applied research, and communicating findings through educational training, scientific presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
This is a two-year position, with the expectation of continuation beyond the initial term based on performance, funding availability, and evolving organizational needs.
Essential Job Functions
- Collaborate on research projects by designing and implementing innovative hydrologic modeling, data analysis, and cloud-computing solutions for the water science community.
- Provide technical and subject-matter expertise in hydrologic science to internal teams and external collaborators across the water science community.
- Contribute to organizational initiatives outside of project-specific research, including internal process development, documentation, reporting, and cross-team coordination to support CUAHSI’s mission and operations.
- Advance CUAHSI’s mission by authoring publications, presenting at scientific conferences, and leading community workshops.
Non-Essential Job Functions
Travel occasionally to attend project meetings, conferences, workshops, and other professional engagements.
Qualification Requirements
- PhD or MS in Hydrology, Water Science or a related field.
- Fluency in at least one programming language (Python and R preferred); strong coding and GIS skills.
- Knowledge of and experience using hydrologic data and models, including cloud native geospatial data, cloud computing technologies.
- Strong scientific communication skills, including the ability to write for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated analytical skills and capacity for complex problem-solving.
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and quickly learn new tools or concepts as needed.
