As Science Education and Outreach Coordinator, Julia assists in the development and execution of CUAHSI’s education and outreach activities. Julia graduated from Boston University with a BA in Earth and Environmental Sciences. During her time at BU she completed research investigating the impact of Canada geese populations on Charles River water quality. Outside of work she enjoys trying out new recipes and spending time exploring outdoors.
Fun Fact: Julia spent 6 months in New Zealand, and another month readjusting to driving on the right side of the road.
As the Controller, Heidi is responsible for all Financial Information, Human Resources, Grant/Award Management, Federal Reporting, Annual Audit, Insurance, Banking and Board of Director reporting on financial/budget status. She has been in Accounting/Financial Management for the entirety of her career. For the last three years she was the Controller at Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA. Heidi holds a B.S. from Anna Maria College where she completed two majors in four years -- Accounting and Finance.
Heidi and her family love to bike, hike, and fish. They can be found at the ocean or in the mountains of New England. She has completed a number of Sprint Triathlons and was an amateur competetive golfer on a national level for many years. In 2000 Heidi climbed the Tuckerman's Ravine Ice Wall free hand with a Don Joy knee brace in March. She was two weeks out from surgery to replace her ACL and it was her last big climb before her 9 month recovery period. Heidi says it was one of the scariest things she's ever done. If her son says "Hey let's do this!", her response will be, "NO WAY, you'll fall and hurt yourself!"
As a Senior Software Engineer, Mark is responsible for developing new Water Data Services products, while contributing to the engineering of existing platforms. He is a seasoned professional with experience across government, marketing, financial and nonprofit sectors, previously working in data management and software engineering for startups. Mark holds a B.A. in Literature from The New School in New York. Mark enjoys healthy cooking and eating, hiking and reading technical nonfiction in his spare time.
Prior to joining CUAHSI, Emily worked as a Shorebird Monitor at Cape Cod National Seashore where she located and monitored nesting endangered shorebirds. Emily holds a BS in Environmental Science from the University of Tampa and an MPA in Enviromental Science and Policy from Columbia University. In her free time, Emily enjoys getting outdoors and practicing making the perfect s'more!
Fun Fact: Emily recently completed her third marathon.
As Accounting Assistant, Nicole directly handles financial documents such as accounts receivable, accounts payable (invoices, bills, reimbursements), purchase orders, program management, HR support, and payroll processing. Prior to joining CUAHSI, every position Nicole has taken has been a stepping stone with increased responsibilities and great exposure. She now has a diverse background in HR, Accounting, and Taxation. Nicole holds an Associate’s Degree in General Education and a certificate in Taxation. Outside of work, Nicole enjoys traveling and eating – she is a total foodie.
Fun Fact: Nicole has traveled to three continents.
Neal DeBuhr is the Quality Assurance Engineer at CUAHSI. He leads the software and quality assurance activities. Before CUAHSI, he improved business operations through software implementation, process optimization, and systems integration. Neal holds a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. Outside of work, Neal enjoys snowboarding and rock climbing.
Fun Fact: Neal built amateur pinball machines in high school.
As Communication Specialist, Ainsley manages CUAHSI Membership, Cyberseminars and the Virtual University. She also manages the monthly newsletter, and all social media.
Prior to CUAHSI, Ainsley worked at the Burkhart Center for Autism Education & Research at Texas Tech University as the Fundraising Coordinator. There, she assisted with the Development Officer’s fundraising efforts and solicitations. Ainsley holds a B.A. in Communications Studies from Texas Tech University. Outside of work, Ainsley enjoys singing, reading and exercising.
Fun Fact: Ainsley is a classically trained singer, and has lived in Japan twice.
As Senior Architect of Data Services, Alva oversees the architecture of the data services CUAHSI provides, including the architecture of the HydroShare system for hydrologic data sharing and its linkages with the existing CUAHSI Hydrologic Information System. Prior to joining CUAHSI, Alva was and remains and Associate Professor of Computer Science at Tufts University. He has been with CUAHSI since 2009 when he was asked to consult on the Ontology project. Since then, Alva has undertaken multiple consulting roles, including the initial design of CUAHSI’s Water Data Center. Alva holds a S.B. in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Tufts University. Alva is a man of many talents: a long-distance bicycle tourist and tandem rider, plays multiple musical instruments, including banjo and harp, and is currently studying Tai Chi Chuan.
Fun Fact: Alva graduated from North Carolina School of Arts with a high school diploma in Bassoon performance. He had a choice of a music or science career – he chose science.
As Hydrologic Scientist, Anthony’s role is to bridge the gap between the development of CUAHSI software and services, and the science that they support. In this regard, he splits his time among projects ranging from data publication and discovery to reproducible science and hydrologic modeling, all with a primary focus of serving the needs of water scientists. Prior to joining CUAHSI, Anthony was a Research Assistant Professor at Utah State University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Anthony holds a B.S in Civil Engineering from Clarkson University, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of South Carolina. In Anthony’s spare time, he enjoys playing tennis, fly fishing, skiing, and mountain biking.
As Technical Director, Martin leads the development of CUAHSI’s data services and contributes to software engineering and IT management. Prior to joining CUAHSI, Martin worked as a GIS/software engineer for a company providing data collection application for disaster relief. Prior to that, he started a GIS company in Germany. Martin holds a Diplom Geography (MSc equivalent) from the University Marburg an der Lahn, Germany. Outside of work, Martin enjoys playing soccer.
Fun Fact: Martin is a big fan of islands and waterfalls.
As Program Manager, Jonathan supports CUAHSI’s mission by monitoring and reporting progress on CUAHSI's suite of research support and education activities, performing outreach, administrating of CUAHSI's Standing Committees, and helping to develop new initiatives. Jonathan’s interests include human-environment interactions, informatics, and data-driven decision making. Prior to working at CUAHSI, he earned a MA in Geography from the University of Connecticut where he focused on climate change vulnerability. He also holds a BA in Geography from the University of Mary Washington.
Fun Fact: Outside of work, Jonathan likes to visit the Catskills and Maine coast. His favorite book is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
Richard Hooper is currently a Research Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tufts University. He is Director Emeritus and was the founding Executive Director of CUAHSI. He continues to help out CUAHSI by providing user input on CUAHSI’s data services and is interested in applying the National Water Model to experimental catchments like the Critical Zone Observatories. Prior to joining CUAHSI, Richard was a Research Hydrologist with the US Geological Survey, initially working at the Panola Mountain Research Watershed and then managing two national-scale water quality monitoring networks for the Office of Water Quality. Richard holds an A.B. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Systems Engineering from Cornell University. Outside of work, Richard and his wife enjoy traveling, reading, and cooking together.
Jerad Bales is the Executive Director at CUAHSI. In his role, Jerad develops and implements the overall strategy for CUAHSI, maintains relationships with its partners and creates new partnerships, and helps to ensure sustainability of the organization. Prior to joining CUAHSI, Jerad spent 25 years with the USGS, conducting hydrologic research, managing the North Carolina Water Science Center, and leading USGS water research and quality assurance activities as the Chief Scientist for Water. Jerad holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Water Resources) from the University of Texas, and a B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Outside of work, Jerad likes to hike and go globetrotting.
Fun Fact: Jerad went bowling at the Harry S. Truman Bowling Alley at the White House.
