Over the course of several years, the Global Water Information Interest Group (GWIIG) of the Research Data Alliance focused on topics related to organization, representation, publication, sharing, discovery, re-use and integration of hydrologic information of different types.  One of the outcomes of the GWIIG was the creation of a list of web portals and/or websites with data or links to data on water resources.  The portals generally provide data that are at a minimum national in scope, and many of the portals offer global data.

The GWIIG requested that CUAHSI host this list to ensure permanence and wider distribution to the community.

Users can scroll through the list of portals below, or use the browse and search tools above.

The list is by no means comprehensive. Feedback or information regarding additional portals can be sent to help@cuahsi.org

USGS Water Data for the Nation

Site Owner:
US Geological Survey (USGS)
Geographical Scope:
USA

Entry point provided by the US Geological Survey for data on water flow and levels, water quality and water use data in the US.

USGS Water Services

Site Owner:
US Geological Survey (USGS)
Geographical Scope:
USA

Complementing the USGS Water Data for the Nation site, but serving water data via automated means with the REST protocol. Services include groundwater levels, water quality, streamflow and more.

Water Data Centre

Site Owner:
European Environment Agency
Geographical Scope:
Europe

European entry point for water related data as part of the Water Information System for Europe (WISE).

Water Data Online

Site Owner:
Commonwealth of Australia, Bureau of Meteorology (BOM)
Geographical Scope:
Australia

Australian Bureau of Meteorology online water data.

Water Data Portal (WDP)

Site Owner:
International Water Management Institute (IWMI)
Geographical Scope:
global

Entry point provided by the International Water Management Institute for a large amount of data related to water and agriculture, including meteorological, hydrological, socio-economic, spatial data layer, satellite images as well as hydrological model setups.

Waterisotopes.org

Site Owner:
Gabriel Bowen/IsoMAP group
Geographical Scope:
Global

Data and data products documenting H and O isotope ratios of waters of the world. The Waterisotopes Database aggregates raw observational data and makes these available through a web portal and API. Other resources on waterisotopes.org provide gridded data products and model-based estimates of hydrological and environmental isotope systems.

WMO Hydrological Observing System (WHOS)

Site Owner:
World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
Geographical Scope:
global

WHOS is the portal to the online holdings of National Hydrological Services (NHS) around the world that publish their historical (OBS) and/or real-time (RT) data without restrictions or cost. It represents the hydrological component of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS).

World Hydrological Cycle Observing System (WHYCOS)

Site Owner:
World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
Geographical Scope:
selected regions (global)

WHYCOS is a framework programme of the WMO dedicated to improving basic observation activities, strengthening international cooperation and promoting the free exchange of data in the field of hydrology.
