GEOtop is a distrubuted Hydrological Model which has been developed by Riccardo Rigon and its team since the late 1990s. GEOtop is a process-based hydrological models that, given the meteorological data and soil parameters in input, allows to know in each point of the domain and in each time: the evaporation of the soil, the transpiration of the vegetation, the radiation and energy fluxes at the Earth surface, the pore water pressure in the soil, the water-table movements in saturated zone, the water discharge in an outlet, the temperature and ice content in the soil, the height and density of the snow, the mass balance of a glacier. On June 2 the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) released the draft National Action Plan to Protect Water Quality and Availability from Climate Change Impacts with a request for comments by July 15. In Situ Optical Water Quality Sensor Networks: Recent advances in in situ optical sensors and data platforms—together with new techniques for data analysis—hold enormous promise for advancing scientific understanding of biogeochemical processes through high frequency measuring of important parameters over large spatial scales. Real-time sensors provide tools for early trend detection, help identify monitoring gaps and ensure timely data for science-based decision support across a range of issues related to ecosystems and human health. This three-day workshop will assemble a diverse group of scientists and managers to identify opportunities and begin developing community standards for making nationally-consistent, high-quality environmental measurements with optical sensors.

CUAHSI-HIS and the New NSF Data Management Plan Requirement

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has instituted a new data management plan (DMP) requirement for all proposals submitted on or after January 18, 2011. A data management plan of up to two pages must now be included with your NSF proposal that details the storage, archiving and dissemination plans for data resulting from NSF-funded projects. CUAHSI has expertise in data storage and management, and can provide certain services to your project at no cost. Travel Grants Available: CUAHSI HydroGeoPhysics Facility

Geophysical methods hold great potential for imaging subsurface structures and monitoring subsurface processes. Hydrogeophysics is a growing area of scientific interest aimed specifically at using geophysical methods to advance hydrologic sciences. CUAHSI has recognized that we are at a critical juncture - effective integration of hydrologic and geophysical knowledge could promote rapid advances in hydrogeophysics to the clear benefit of hydrologic science. To support this initiative, we have funding from the National Science Foundation for travel grants to support direct interactions between hydrologists and geophysicists. To apply, a hydrologist (or team of hydrologists) should submit a three-page proposal together with a geophysicist (or team of geophysicists). The proposal would support travel for a geophysicist to visit an active hydrologic study site and to consult on the possible inclusion of geophysical methods in the investigations. [see more]
