CUAHSI HMF Hands-On Workshops
CUAHSI-Supported Hands-On Instrumentation Workshops
CUAHSI sponsors hands-on training workshops that benefit the water science community. CUAHSI has funds to organize and support workshop activity, but does not provide any compensation to workshop organizers or chairs. These opportunities are most appropriate for investigators willing to champion and share their instrumentation with the broader community, and can provide benefits such as enhanced demand, use, and impact of your instrumentation.
Hands-on workshops can be coupled to current training or courses you may do, and may be appropriate opportunities for graduate students to take leadership roles.
What CUAHSI provides
- Financial Support to provide stipends to instructors, equipment transport costs, etc.
- Logistics and planning assistance from staff
- Assistance with financial model for workshop (i.e., registration structure, etc.)
- Advertising and publicity for your workshop
- Workshop assessment and feedback provided to you
What you provide
- The expertise, enthusiasm and equipment
- An interesting science or technical question
- Connections with the instrumentation community to arrange or suggest instructors, keynote speakers, attendees, etc.
- A commitment to the planning and execution of a successful workshop
How to Propose a Hands-On Workshop
Hands-on Workshops are organized through CUAHSI's Standing Committee on Instrumentation. Potential workshop organizers are encouraged to contact CUAHSI's Program Manager, Jennifer Arrigo (jarrigo@cuahsi.org) to discuss their idea. CUAHSI will then request a two page workshop proposal to be evaluated by a Selection Committee. The Committee will recommend action to the Board of Directors, which has funding authority.
Workshop proposals should be submitted directly to Jennifer Arrigo (jarrigo@cuahsi.org) as an email attachment.
A two page workshop proposal should include the following information:
- Tentative topic of the workshop
- Type of instrumentation, details on cost and complexity of use, applications, etc.
- Objective of Workshop. For example, Is the goal of this workshop to:
- Introduce and train new users on the equipment?
- Resolve a technical question utilizing current users and experts?
- Develop Innovative uses for the equipment or observations?
- Draft logistics
- Number of participants
- Possible locations and dates
- Approximate costs
- Possible funding sources beyond CUAHSI workshop funds (e.g., corporate sponsorship, agency sponsorship, registration fees). CUAHSI can assist with pursuing these ideas in the planning stages
- Draft agenda
- Length of workshop
- Format (e.g., training sessions/breakouts/field deployments)
- Role of instructors, keynote speakers, participant contributions (i.e., papers, posters)
- Value to the community
- A statement summarizing the merit of the workshop, particularly in regards to why this is an appropriate topic for the CUAHSI community, and how it serves the broader goal of advancing water science.
Please submit your proposal to Jennifer Arrigo at jarrigo@cuahsi.org.
