CUAHSI Third Biennial Science Meeting - Fusing Science and Solutions - July 16-18, 2012 - Boulder, CO
Since 2008, CUAHSI has held Biennial Colloquia to explore cutting-edge issues in hydrologic science, biogeochemistry, and environmental engineering that can benefit from the community planning that CUAHSI enables. This year's Colloquium, "Fusing Science and Solutions," seeks to foster dialogue on how to bridge gaps between research and practice, and how to best use environmental observatories in this effort.

The Biennial is a unique opportunity for the water science community to come together in a small, focused setting, and CUAHSI is again planning events such as a graduate student program, software and instrumentation workshops, and sessions on topical events and new hydrologic initiatives, that were well-received in previous years.

Sediment Hydroacoustic Techniques for Rivers and Streams, March 20-22 • National Conservation Training Center, Shepherdstown, West Virginia
CUAHSI is co-sponsoring a workshop on hydroacoustic techniques for measuring and monitoring sediment transport in rivers and streams with the USGS Office of Surface Water. These techniques hold much potential for providing new data and information on the hydro- and morphodynamics of streams. Sediment transport processes (suspended and bed load) are intrinsically related to local stream hydrodynamics. Acoustic measurements can acquire simultaneously water and sediment data, and can be used in a wide variety of environments and applications.

The workshop will convene scientists, engineers, manufacturers, and managers interested in hydroacoustic technology applications for measuring/monitoring suspended load, bed load, bed material, and related hydrodynamic characteristics in rivers and streams. The workshop foci will include:

• technological advances,
• calibration and uncertainty issues,
• applications, and
• potential opportunities to use hydroacoustics to address new research questions.

Techniques to Quantify Stream-Groundwater Exchange and Shallow Transport - A Hands-on Workshop - June 12-15, 2012 • Penn State University
This Hands-on workshop will introduce and train new users to novel techniques (conservative solute tracers, smart tracers, distributed temperature sensing, and electrical resistivity imaging) that can be used to investigate stream-groundwater interactions. Participants will learn to apply four techniques and learn related experimental design, data acquisition, data processing, and analysis issues for stream-groundwater interaction studies. The workshop also aims to stimulate discussion about how to appropriately apply these techniques and from where the next breakthroughs in quantifying stream-groundwater dynamics will come. The U.S. Geological Survey's John Wesley Powell Center for Earth System Science Analysis and Synthesis fosters innovative thinking in earth system science. Interdisciplinary working groups comprising USGS researchers and their national and international colleagues in academia and government will collaborate on analysis and synthesis of existing data and information. In 2011, the USGS and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences concluded an agreement for a pilot effort to host synthesis projects at the Powell Center in Fort Collins, Colorado in 2012 and 2013. The USGS Powell Center and the NSF are currently accepting proposals for 2013 Working Groups, and will jointly fund two to three proposals for 2013. Proposals for Powell Center 2013 Working Groups are due by April 30, 2012.

Groups that submit successful proposals will receive computing and data management support and use of meeting facilities in Fort Collins, CO. Proposal preparation details differ slightly between submissions to USGS and jointly-funded USGS/NSF, so be sure to read the instructions carefully. Two positions--a User Support Specialist and a Communications-Outreach Specialist-are available at CUAHSI's Medford, MA office, just outside Boston. Both positions are open immediately and have a target hiring date of March 1, 2012. Applicants are now being interviewed and interviews will continue until the positions are filled.

The User Support Specialist will assist the community in using CUAHSI HIS for data publication, data discovery, and analysis. The target education level is a master's degree in a water science discipline with strong data management skills. Further information is available at www.cuahsi.org/suppspec2011.html.

The Communications-Outreach Specialist will execute a communications strategy with our membership and with the broader public. Applicants with a bachelors or masters degree in water science with some experience in communications or a bachelors or masters degree in communications with experience in environmental science are sought. This spring, CUAHSI will continue its yearlong Cyberseminar series "Earth Observatories for Interdisciplinary Science: Reports from Critical Zone Observatories and Water, Sustainability and Climate Studies."
