Graduate training in hydrologic science typically focuses on a single field site or single modeling approach. To assist graduate students in enriching their research program by moving beyond a "one site, one view" approach to research, CUAHSI is providing travel support for graduate students to make an extended visit (approximately 1-3 months) to conduct field research at an additional site or to collaborate with a research group using alternate modeling methods of those in a graduate student's current research program.

CUAHSI will provide funding for up to five graduate students, with a $5000.00 maximum award to each recipient, to cover travel costs associated with conducting field research at an additional field site or to collaborate with a research group using alternate modeling approaches.

Following the CUAHSI 2010 Biennial held in Boulder in July, we asked the attendees for their feedback. As an incentive to encourage completion of the survey, we offered one free registration to the 2012 meeting. We held a random drawing of those individuals who attended the meeting (excluding CUAHSI staff and Board members) and who completed the survey, including some minimal demographic data. We are pleased to announce that the winner of the free registration to the CUAHSI 2012 Biennial Colloquium is . . . Sasha Richey of the University of California, Irvine. Congratulations, Sasha.

Post-Biennial Survey Results

There were 150 registered attendees at the July meeting and 86 of those responded to our call for feedback. Analysis of the survey results indicated—in brief—the following:

• the overwhelming majority (93%) liked the format of the meeting; i.e., mixed plenary talks and sessions;
• about 83% of attendees thought that the length of the discussion sessions was about right;
• most of you thought the Monday afternoon Poster session "useful" or "very useful" but a number of you commented that the poster room was crowded and not especially conducive to comfortable discussion;
• less than half of the survey respondents indicated that they stayed for the Wednesday/Thursday workshops with 68% of those people who did not attend any workshops citing time constraints as the reason;
• nearly 70% of the survey takers indicated that they attended the Banquet dinner on Tuesday evening; this tracks with the fact that 110 of the 150 registered meeting folks attended the dinner;
• reaction to the Banquet dinner venue was nearly unanimous - - awesome!

A Research Agricultural Engineer or Research Hydrologist is needed to conduct research to evaluate and develop tools, practices, and technology that conserve and protect water resources in cranberry production systems.

The incumbent serves as a Research Agricultural Engineer or Research Hydrologist and a interdisciplinary team member with the USDA-ARS New England Plant, Soil, and Water Laboratory. Conducts research and applies hydrological or agricultural engineering methodology employed in cranberry production and evaluates and develops tools, practices, and technology that conserve and protect water resources in cranberry production systems.

The position is located at the University of Massachusetts Cranberry Station in East Wareham, MA and is administered from the USDA-ARS New England Plant Soil and Water Laboratory in Orono, ME. The research will be closely coordinated with the USDA-ARS Vegetable Crops Research Unit in Madison, WI. OPEN PERIOD: Monday, August 16, 2010 to Monday, September 27, 2010.
