CUAHSI Annual Meeting & Board of Directors Elections

CUAHSI held its Annual Membership Meeting on December 8, 2008. Among other items of business, elections were conducted for five open seats on the Board of Directors. The following people were elected to serve three-year terms as Directors:

Larry Band - University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Jay Famiglietti, University of California - Irvine
Tissa Illangasekare - Colorado School of Mines
Jennifer Jacobs - University of New Hampshire
Scott Tyler - University of Nevada - Reno

Thank you to all those individuals who participated in these important elections.

In addition, CUAHSI held its first Board of Directors meeting for 2009 on January 8-9 in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, Larry Band was elected as the Chair-Elect. Jay Famiglietti will serve as Chair and the Past-Chair position will be held by Efi Foufoula. Larry Murdoch was elected as an At-Large Executive Committee Member.

Workshop on Community Hydrologic Modeling Platform (CHyMP): Blueprint for a CHyMP

CUAHSI is pleased to announce that registration is open for the 2nd Workshop on a Community Hydrologic Modeling Platform (CHyMP) at the University of Memphis on March 31 and April 1, 2009. The second workshop follows the Scoping Workshop held in Washington, D.C. in March, 2008. The goals of the first workshop were to scope the needs and requirements of a community modeling activity in hydrology from a small group with diverse modeling expertise. The idea was very well received.

We have organized the second workshop in order to move forward toward the development and implementation of a CHyMP. Our goal for this workshop is to engage a much larger group of 80-100 participants from a range of backgrounds including academic, research, government, industry and funding agencies. In particular we will work to refine the concept of the CHyMP and begin to identify its hydrologic components and technological specifications.

GEOtop Modeling Software Available for Download

GEOtop is a distributed model of the mass and energy balance of the hydrological cycle, which is applicable to simulations in continuum in small catchments. GEOtop deals with the effects of topography on the interaction between energy balance and hydrological cycle with peculiar solutions. This manual explains the theoretical backgound, the model's structure, the code organization, the input and output files and some applications examples.

The executable and source code of version 0.935 KMackenzie of the distributed hydrological model GEOtop is available for download at www.geotop.org.

CUAHSI Announced the Winner of the Hydrograf(x) Visualization Competition

Patrick Broxton's (University of Arizona - Hydrology and Water Resources) "Visualization in Hydrology Using Google Earth" was the winner of the Technical/Professional category for CUAHSI's Hydrograf(x) competition. CUAHSI and all of its members congratulate Patrick for his efforts. He was recognized and received his award at the CUAHSI reception during Fall AGU 2008. First prize for the competition consisted of a fully paid trip to the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union this past December.

Summer Short Courses Hosted by Polytechnic Institute of NYU, Columbia University and PACE University

"Copula Function: theory and practice" - July 20-24, 2009: The short course introduces participants on Copula function. In the four days either theoretical background and hydrological application will be given. In the fifth day participants are invited to prepare and show a project developed applying the routines explained during the course. Application submission deadline: January 31, 2009. "GIS Terrain Analysis for Hydrogeomorphic Applications" - July 27-31, 2009: The short course introduces participants to the understanding and application of GIS-based terrain analysis principles and tools within hydrologic and geomorphic applications. State-of-the art as well as standard GIS tools are taught during theoretical morning lectures and applied during afternoon labs during the first 4 days, while in the last day participants will develop and present results of their own projects. GIS terrain analysis tools developed by authors together with lecture-lab material will be distributed to participants on a CD. Application submission deadline: January 31, 2009. [more information]
