Attend the CUAHSI Reception at Fall AGU! Tuesday, 12/16 at the Grand Hyatt: meeting at 6:30pm in the Plaza Ballroom West; reception follows until 9:00pm in the Ballroom Foyer. Hors d'oeuvres & libations will be served. (See map for directions)
HIS Users Group: We are forming a users group for the HIS software tools. These include: DASH, FetchWaterML, HydroExcel, HydroGet, HydroLink, HydroObjects, HydroSeek, ODM and ODM Tools, Water OneFlow Web Services. If you are using any of these tools for research or for teaching, this is your chance to be directly involved in guiding their development. Even if you are not interested in being actively involoved, we would like to know how you are using the HIS software tools in your teaching and research. Please contact David Kirschtel at: dkirschtel@cuahsi.org.

CHyMP Workshop 2009 Scheduled for Memphis |
|
CUAHSI is pleased to announce the 2nd Workshop on a Community Hydrologic Modeling Platform (CHyMP) at the University of Memphis on March 31 and April 1, 2009. The second workshop follows the Scoping Workshop held in Washington, DC in March, 2008. The goals of the first workshop were to scope the needs and requirements of a community modeling activity in hydrology from a small group with diverse modeling expertise. The idea was very well received.
In order to move forward toward the development and implementation of a CHyMP, we are in the process of organizing our second workshop. Our goal for this workshop is to engage a much larger group of 80-100 participants from a range of backgrounds including academic, research, government, industry and funding agencies. In particular we will work to refine the concept of the CHyMP and begin to identify its hydrologic components and technological specifications.
Please reserve these dates for this important meeting. More details on the meeting, including the agenda and logistics, will follow shortly. This information will also be available on the CUAHSI web page (www.cuahsi.org).
For additional background information, refer to the Community Modeling in Hydrologic Science article in Eos, Vol. 89, No. 32, 5 August 2008.

Hydrograf(x) Competition Award |
|
Patrick Broxton's (University of Arizona - Hydrology and Water Resources) "Visualization in Hydrology Using Google Earth" is the winner of the Technical/Professional category for CUAHSI's Hydrograf(x) competition. CUAHSI and all of its members would like to congratulate Patrick. First prize for the competition consists of a fully paid trip to the Fall 2008 Meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The trip includes round-trip airfare to San Francisco, hotel accommodation, meeting registration fees, and a per diem allowance for meals.
CUAHSI will make a formal, public presentation of the award at the its Fall AGU 2008 "Town Hall" and Reception at 6:30pm on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 in the Plaza Ballroom West at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco, located at 345 Stockton Street (See map for directions).

Announcing Formation of the Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System |
|
CUAHSI is pleased to announce the formation of the Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS) Hydrology Focus Research Group (FRG). The CSDMS will provide community modeling tools to the surface dynamics and sediment transport communities. As such, the links to hydrology are clear. CUAHSI has volunteered to sponsor the formation of the Hydrology FRG in order to better share our expertise with the CSDMS community and to learn from the software development that CSDMS is undertaking. Our goal is to provide input to the CSDMS Executive Committee, its Working Groups and other FRGs , on how to best include hydrology in the CSDMS.
The Hydrology FRG will also act as the liaison to relevant activities within CUAHSI, including the Community Hydrologic Modeling Platform (CHyMP). As the group has just formed, this is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor and to bring your ideas to the table. If you are interested in contributing to hydrologic modeling activities in the CSDMS, by any means, please join the Hydrology FRG at csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/index.php/Join_Workinggroup. To learn more about CSMDS, go to csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/index.php/Introduction.
The first meeting of the FRG will be January 20-21, 2009 in Boulder. For details, visit csdms.colorado.edu/wiki/index.php/HMC. For further information, please contact Jay Famiglietti - Chair, CSDMS Hydrology Focus Research Group at jfamigli@uci.edu.

CUAHSI-hosted Wiki Used for Interdisciplinary Water-related Modeling Class |
|
The University of Nevada Reno (UNR) and the University of California at Davis (UCD) used a CUAHSI-hosted wiki for a course on interdisciplinary water-related modeling during the summer of 2008. The CUAHSI-hosted wiki was used prior to and during the course. Items posted to the site included logistical information for participants, materials for lectures and exercises, required and recommended readings for topics, and materials for the class projects. Although posting to the wiki was primarily done by the lead instructors, it is anticipated that similar future wikis will be accessible to people browsing the CUAHSI Web site in order to attract and inform students from other institutions.
Comments from students regarding the wiki included:
- Really enjoyed the online wiki and reducing paper through the use of online tools;
- Always appreciated getting presentations in hard copy/online availability;
- The class wiki was great. The entire class was really impressively organized and it was great to know that the notes and readings were all right there.
For more information, please see www.cuahsi.org/docs/intmod-wiki.pdf. The Wiki itself can be viewed at cuahsi.centraldesktop.com/intmod/.

Sediment Data-Collection Techniques - USGS Training Opportunity |
|
This training course, located in Castle Rock and Vancouver, WA and scheduled for March 30-April 3, 2009, is intended to provide instruction in basic sediment data-collection techniques with principal emphasis onamong other elementsbasic fluvial-sediment concepts; sampler characteristics; field techniques for sampling with suspended-sediment, bed material, and bedload samplers; laboratory analyses of sediment samples; and overview of computation of sediment-discharge records.
About half of the course period is devoted to "hands-on" field experience using a variety of samplers and techniques from bridges over and wading in streams draining Mt. St. Helens southern and western flanks region. Registration Deadline: December 14, 2008 [Not for USGS only: For more information]

REMINDER: Hydrologic Measurement Facility Equipment Survey 2008 |
|
The CUAHSI Hydrologic Measurement Facility (HMF) has been working for the hydrologic community for the past three years, and wants to hear your feedback and ideas. We will use this survey to direct the specific efforts that we will promote in the coming 5 yearsa period when we expect to see significant growth and maturation in the HMF.
As you fill out this survey please be thinking: "How can I make sure that the HMF is going to help me do better research?" This would suggest that your written comments may be more important that your check-box answers if you have specific needs. [Access & Take the Survey]
