Update on the CUAHSI Biennial Science Meeting: Resilience & Vulnerability of Natural and Managed Systems

Themes: Integrated Observations; Water Cycle Modeling; Advanced Instrumentation; Humans and the Water Cycle. Scheduled for July 14-16, 2008 in Boulder, Colorado. Professor Wilfried Brutsaert, Cornell University will be the inaugural Pete Eagleson Lecturer on Hydrologic Science and the Dr. Robert Hirsch, US Geological Survey, will be the inaugural Reds Wolman Lecturer on Humans and Waters.

Opportunities from the WATERS Network Project Office

The WATERS Network Project Office (WNPO) is requesting community input and participation as we near completion of our Phase 1 planning activities and plan a proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Phase 2 planning activities, which will primarily focus on a national network design study. CUAHSI has partnered with the environmental engineering community in the design of the WATERS Network. WNPO is an NSF-funded project to lead the community planning for a national network of observatories and experimental facilities to understand and predict the multi-scale processes coupling water and waterborne constituents with Earth and human systems. Scientists and engineers from three research communities (environmental engineering and science, hydrologic and related Earth sciences, and social, behavioral and economic science) are working together to secure Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction (MREFC) funding from NSF to build this network. Further background on the WATERS Network and plans for Phase 2 can be found in the background information document at www.watersnet.org/docs/RFI-Fnl.pdf.

Fiber Optics in Ecological Sensing Workshop

The CUAHSI Hydrologic Measurement Facility (HMF) is pleased to announce the second Fiber Optics in Ecological Sensing Workshop to be held June 2-7. This workshop presents a complete introduction to the technique, including fiber and instrument selection, fiber placement, fiber repair, data acquisition, and data analysis. The workshop will be held at the HJ Andrews experimental forest, and the participants will take part in the design, installation and analysis of installations to measure surface water-groundwater interactions and air-shed processes based on fiber optic temperature methods. This is open to all, including international participants, with a limit of 40 participants. Please feel free to share this notice with those you think may find it useful.

For additional information, please see the workshop flyer at www.cuahsi.org/hmf/docs/fodts-workshop.pdf.

Announcing hydrosci-l: an email list for the hydrologic science community

Modeled after the listservs that have become integral components of other science communities (ecolog-l, benthos-l, algae-l, diatom-l etc) David Kirschtel, the CUAHSI Program Manager, has set up hydrosci-l. Hydrosci-l is the place to post announcements (about conferences, jobs, meetings, studentships), questions to the research community or otherwise provide for the rapid communication of ideas. In order to keep the "signal-to-noise ratio" high, posting will be reviewed by a moderator before being distributed, only subscribers to the list will be allowed to post to the list and messages will be plain text only.

For more information about the group and to start your subscription go to: http://groups.google.com/group/hydrosci-l. If anyone is interested in sharing the moderating duties, please contact David Kirschtel at dkirschtel@cuahsi.org.
