CUAHSI Announces 2007 Early Career Fellowship Awards

On December 4th CUAHSI released a press notice announcing the six winners of the 2007 Early Career Fellowships. The fellowship support will be used to provide travel for the fellows to work at two recently organized centers for Hydrologic Synthesis, funded by the National Science Foundation. This year's inaugural fellowship awardees are:

  • Francina Dominguez - University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.
  • G. Darrel Jenerette - University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.
  • Anne Lightbody - University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • Jennifer Saleem Arrigo - East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina.
  • Daniel J. Bain - University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
  • Brian A. Pellerin - U.S. Geological Survey, Sacramento, California.

Drs. Dominguez, Jenerette, and Lightbody will join the Hydrologic Synthesis Center team headed by Dr. Murugesu Sivapalan at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This team of 25 hydrologic scientists, representing thirteen U.S. and three international universities, is working on a series of projects focusing on four areas of concern in hydrology: human-nature interactions and adaptations; role of the biosphere in water cycle dynamics; human induced changes to water cycle dynamics; and structure of landscapes and their evolution through time.

Drs. Arrigo, Bain, and Pellerin will join the Hydrologic Synthesis Center team headed by Dr. Charles Vörösmarty at the University of New Hampshire, Durham. This team of 25 hydrologic scientists is focusing on issues pertaining to the widespread alteration of hydrologic systems at local-to-regional geographic scales in the Northeastern region of the U.S over the 500-year period starting from 1600 and extending to 2100.

The awards will be formally presented on December 11, 2007 at the CUAHSI Reception to be held in Room 300 at the Moscone Center South in San Francisco, California during the 2007 annual Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

CUAHSI-CMWR Student Fellow Awards

CUAHSI has announced an opportunity for graduate students to apply for a registration fee waiver at Computational Methods in Water Resources (CMWR) XVII International Conference on July 6-10, 2008 in San Francisco. Ten students will be chosen to receive the CUAHSI-CMWR Student Fellow Award, which are intended to encourage graduate students to participate, present research, and interact with other scientists at CMWR.

Important Information:

  1. The deadline for applying for the CUAHSI-CMWR Student Fellow Awards is December 14th, 2007.
  2. To apply for the award, graduate students must download and complete the application, and submit the first-author abstract by email (CMWR2008@lbl.gov).
  3. Notification of the awards will be made by January 11, 2008.
  4. After notification about awards, students will have the opportunity to formally submit their abstract through the CMWR abstract submission page which will be open until January 25, 2008.

New Hydrologic Daily Values Web Services

The USGS and CUAHSI are pleased to announce a new Web service for the delivery of hydrologic data, available for beta testing as of December 3, 2007. This service is a part of the development of a Web services architecture for water resources data. This architecture enables scientists and engineers to easily acquire information from a wide range of data providers in a form that is highly efficient for both the provider and the user and which assures that the metadata (information about the data such as place, time, qualifications and definitions) are transmitted with the data. The direct machine to machine communication provided by Web services supports applications that consume and analyze data without requiring user intervention or downloading the data using a Web browser.

For a more in-depth analysis, please refer to the joint announcement from the USGS and CUAHSI.
