For Your Information

There are still a number of slots for CUAHSI members to rent equipment through USGS HIF. Additional information regarding participation in the HIF's available by visiting www.cuahsi.org/docs/hif-pilot.pdf.

CUAHSI Notes

Three short movies were produced for CUAHSI. They are intended to be used by scientists to explain the concepts behind the environmental observatories that are under development at the National Science Foundation. Engaging stakeholders, particularly land owners from whom scientists need access, is critical to the development of these observatories. [more information]

CUAHSI — The Next 5 Years

CUAHSI is currently preparing a renewal proposal for consideration by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The target date for submission of this proposal is August 2007.

The proposal will address the fundamental science in the recently released CUAHSI Science Plan, "Hydrology of a Dynamic Earth." Specifically the proposal will likely include:

  • community workshops to design intensive measurement campaigns aimed at testing the generality of understanding described in the science plan;
  • community workshops on the development of integrated hydrologic modeling platforms;
  • community workshops on the development of hydrologic literacy principles and the development of resources useful for teaching hydrology and for outreach;
  • user support for software developed by the CUAHSI Hydrologic Information System; and
  • various travel grants for further development of the hydrologic community.

For all of these activities, we need community input. What topics should we pursue? Who wants to lead an activity? What is the community demand for a service? To answer these questions, there will be a number of "Notices of Opportunity" and "Requests for Information" going out to the community. Please take the time to read through these notices, respond if interested and pass them on to other colleagues who might be interested.

Further information about CUAHSI's planned activities is available at www.cuahsi.org/next-5-years.html. The form of the response required is listed within each Notice or Request. In all cases, the deadline for response is July 2, 2007.

Database of Education and Outreach Programs

To assist the CUAHSI community in identifying existing education and outreach programs that might be useful outlets for their research, the CUAHSI Education and Outreach program has developed a database of existing hydrology-related education and outreach groups around the nation. These groups may be useful as partners to meet NSF "broader impact" requirements or may provide information that may help researchers better design and tailor their own outreach programs.

Each resource includes the Internet site where the data was found along with a relevant description of the specific outreach program. Please refer to the program site for contact information.

The database (www.hydrologicscience.org/wsop/) is organized to enable searching based on the following criteria:

  • Geographic location (national to local);
  • Type of organization (e.g., federal, nonprofit, commercial);
  • Target audience / education level; and
  • Open text searches on Themes, Keywords, and Descriptions.

If you are aware of programs that are not currently in this database or would like to add your own program to the database, please email the program's Web site URL and a brief description of the program to the CUAHSI Webmaster. Similarly, if you have any comments about existing items in the database, please forward them as well. Thank you for your participation.
